Uteuzi Jimbo is Swahili for “county select,” and is part of Cafe Imports’ Regional Select program, designed to highlight the different coffee-growing counties of Kenya where Cafe Imports primarily works: Nyeri, Embu, Muranga, and Kirinyaga.
These coffees are traceable to the region and are created by blending lots from different factories in each area based on cup quality and profile.
Embu is located in the foothills of Mount Kenya, northeast of Nairobi. The region is known for its rich soil, high growing elevations, and two rainy seasons. About 80% of Embu households work in agriculture, and the region produces approximately 600,000 kg (1,322,773 lbs) of coffee per year.
Most Kenyan coffee is washed. The traditional Kenyan washed method includes fermentation followed by soaking the coffee underwater while still in parchment.
